The amulet, dated to the 10th century, is made of bronze and features a runic inscription on one side consisting of seven characters. The inscription, deciphered by runologist Lisbeth Imer at the National Museum of Denmark, reads “Hmar is x,” which translates to “This is a hammer” in English. The inscription contains two errors: the first ‘a’ in “hammer” is omitted, and the S-rune is reversed, possibly due to the constraints of the small space or the carver’s literacy. The runic inscription has been interpreted not only as a simple identification but also as a potential magical or apotropaic formula. The sequence of runes, when analyzed numerically according to the younger fuþark, yields a value of 50, which is ten times the number five, associated with the rune raiðo (“riding”) and the Old English derivative rad, linked to “Þunor’s riding” or the clap of thunder. This interpretation connects the amulet to Thor’s thunderous chariot and the power of Mjölnir.
